Keston Turns One

Our little boy is officially one year old, we are so excited to have celebrated this milestone in his life as a family. We love birthday celebrations and decided to do something non - traditional as a modern family.

We gave Keston a cake smash shoot, this is a fun experience for the whole family to participate in and enjoy. It is easy, and best part, you don't have to clean up the mess :).

The session includes a mini family shoot, cake smash, and bath tub splash. So, because i love documenting our life in pictures, i was excited to do a three - in - one shoot.

The birthday cake was a three tier vanilla sponge design, covered with blue butter icing completed with some gold stars and a Prince K crown. Studio decor and little outfits for the cake smasher are available, free from CJ Photography.

Jan and Chantal from CJ Photography are our trusted family photographers. We love their work and they are simply amazing with kids. Chantal is the beautiful lady behind the camera and Jan is the funny guy who dances and plays the most incredible little tricks to get your kid to laugh out loud. As parents to our one year old we did not want throw a birthday party, we liked the idea of a cake smash to let our child have fun and enjoy smashing it with us.

Like all occasions, our photographers briefed us before the shoot, they explained to expect the unexpected and not stress if our little one cries. He is not used to smashing something as a big as a cake, because he will probably feel fearful. As a mom you want to shield your child from any sort of fear, so i made it clear that i do not want perfect pictures, only that my Son enjoys himself.

After the tears, our little champ enjoyed his cake smash, he got right in and ate a few pieces.

We could tell the taste of the cake was strange for him, as we hardly give him sugar and after one or two occasions of hyperactivity from a small piece of chocolate. We restricted him to yogurt and fruit sticks with natural sugars. Bubbles were blown to distract him from crawling towards me in the studio and Chantal gave him a spoon, which he loved using while smashing his cake.

We got to have a quick break during the shoot for a bottle feed, shocking how thirsty a little one gets in a short space of time while on set. He had drank a bottle before we arrived at the studio and thirty minutes into the shoot, another bottle. Wow this little boy was getting tired as he was up from 06h00 that morning. We placed him back by his smashed cake to finish off with a few more shots and lastly a bath tub splash. Keston was now a bit irritable and wanted something to comfort him, i suggested his pacifier, which turned out to be a perfect idea.

We ended the cake smash session with a bath tub splash, cute as ever our little boy splashed away and then gave a straight stare at the camera, while sucking his pacifier. He was indeed exhausted, and slept so well after his shoot. Of all three series, my favourite was the family shoot (pictures in my previous blog post). They capture the true beauty of us laughing out loud at our little boy's cute personality.

I do hope you enjoyed the details on our little boy's first cake smash shoot. Supplier details are listed below.

Until next time,

Much Love & Blessings Lana T xxx
