My Maternity Hospital Bag

Updated: Aug 23, 2018

Prepping my hospital bag(s) was a lot of fun, firstly i did so at 30 weeks pregnant.

Yes that early, because babies hardly ever come on time as per my Grandmother Sylvia advise. So seeing this was my first child i wanted to be prepared and spent a few minutes daily Googling tips for hospital packing.

A friend of mine had already given birth, a year before me at the same hospital I was to birth my child, her advice was clear and she gave me a list of what to pack and leave out.

Keep in mind that most hospitals provide mom's with a baby bag filled with toiletries to lighten your packing, check with your hospital maternity ward what is provided complimentary to mothers and babies while staying after child birth.

Do not forget about dad, a little snack pack filled with treats, eats and drinks will make him a little less anxious and grumpy through the labor process. Food for the very hungry can be ordered online and delivered to the hospital, create a list of close by restaurants to your hospital. Baby was due five days before Mr hubster birthday, so i created a little card celebrating his birthday to be as a daddy and placed it in his snack bag.

Here’s a list of items to pack in you and your little one’s hospital bags to prepare for the big day.

What to pack in baby’s bag:

  • Newborn Baby Rompers

  • Newborn Baby Swaddle or Cuddle Zip - Up

  • Receiver Blanket or Muslin Wrap

  • Newborn Cotton Hat

  • Newborn Cotton Vest

  • Cotton Cloth

  • Cotton Mittens

  • Bottle

  • Newborn Dummy

  • Formula

  • Baby Aqueous Cream

  • Bum Cream

  • Baby Oil

  • Powder

  • Wet Wipes

  • Nappies

  • Vaseline

It helps to be more organised, keep a plastic bag in your baby's hospital bag encase of any spills from the liquid that will spoil your nappies and clothing. I used one of my travel toiletry bag's for all baby's things to avoid any leaks and accidents.

What to pack in your bag:

  • Pajama Shirt Dress (Buttons)

  • Onesie (Zip-Down)

  • Body Wash

  • Mouth Wash & Toothbrush

  • Hair Brush

  • Coco-Butter Lotion & Vaseline

  • Nipple Cream (Lanolin)

  • Maternity Hospital Panties (Carriwell)

  • Post Birth Support Panties (Cariwell)

  • Maternity Sanitary Pads

  • Hot Water Bottle

  • Nursing Bra

  • Long Shirt

  • Leggings

  • Maxi Long Dress

  • Socks

  • Booties or Slippers

  • Book & Music (Earphones)

  • Minimal Cash

  • WIFI Connection

  • I pad / Laptop

What to pack in your daddy snack pack bag:

  • Water

  • Soft Drink

  • Jungle Bars

  • Chocolate Bars

  • Crisps

  • Fruit Sticks

  • Jelly Babies

  • Nuts & Raisins

Labor can be long, your husband may be tired and hungry after 48 hours.

Pack your freezer with frozen meals and have a list of close by restaurants for hubby.

I went into labour early than expected, thankfully my dear friend Esther and her hubby Dumile prepared dinner for Mr hubster and brought it to the hospital for him, sweet friends and super thoughtful. Lastly once baby is born, check with your hospital maternity ward if they allow catering for daddy, this can be helpful as most hospital's allow daddy to visit all day.

I do hope you enjoyed the details on my hospital bag . Tips and updates below.

Much Love & Blessings Lana T xxx
