Our Journey with Solid's

Updated: Mar 4, 2019

Solid's can be a fun affair and experience for your little one, our journey on solid's started officially once Keston turned six months on the 19th of January 2018.

Mr Hubster and I started little Keston on gluten-free rice cereal, he disliked the taste at first go, there was no fooling this little boy, he even rejected the bottle if we put a teaspoon of rice cereal in it, so we started Cerelac honey and strawberry flavoured maize cereal just add milk or water, which Keston took an instant liking to and still enjoys it up to day. We bought him his own cutlery, bowel and cup for meal time. Each time we gave him a solid, we would let him play with his spoon while we get his food ready. To introduce him to water, we would fill his cup and tell him water! water! which made him laugh and grab his cup. It took a while for him to grasp drinking his water from a sippy cup but once he got the hang of it, he loved his water after each meal served.

Each morning we would pack 5 teaspoons of Cerelac in a container for Keston breakfast at school and at night we would put a teaspoon into his night bottle, he enjoyed it because of the flavour i guess and no my child did not sleep through the night, he still got up for two feeds, 11:30PM and 03:30AM. After a few weeks of success on Cerelac we moved onto the six month little Purity jars of food and Squish (Squeeze and Eat), Keston started off on butternut, apples and a small helping of double cream white Greek yogurt. How we could tell if Keston tummy agreed to the solid's was by checking how formed his dirty nappies were, we noticed he used less nappies as he ate more solid's.

At seven months old, I wanted more ideas on what to make for baby to enjoy his solid's more as the food in a jar is very limiting (age appropriate), I spoke to my grandma who advised me to blend different ingredients for added flavoring to place with simple foods and allow Keston to enjoy, something as simple as grounded oats and avocado blended as well as blended chicken, butternut and peas. During the day at play school Keston enjoyed his cereal, snack and purity meal along with two bottles of formula milk.

We experienced no problem with Keston little tummy on his solid's, I spoke to grandparents and Keston day teacher about giving him only the food and snacks we pack, this was not easy for the grandparents to absorb in the beginning as it would be natural for them to want to spoil and give their first grandchild practically anything sweet or nice, with everyone on board our little baby ate well unless he was sick, teething or too upset and just wanted his milk.

Between the eight or nine month age, Keston had a dirty nappy that was different, it was the first sign of constipation, we knew it would come at some point and had previously researched and stocked a few bottles of purity prune food jars as well as apples and prune fruit juice (age appropriate), we fed Keston some prunes and gave him some water, he settled fine after a day and when the situation reoccurred we gave him some apple and prune juice. He has not suffered much with constipation since then as we very cautious on what we give him to eat.

By ten months plus we fed Keston two meals, a snack, two bottles of formula at play school and for dinner a meal and two bottles of formula at night. He did not always eat his dinner, some nights he would be fussy, reject the meals and only want his milk. I spent a lot of money investing in Umatie foods (frozen meals) for baby, they have a variety of flavours and all their food is 100% healthy and delicious. I landed up enjoying the left overs, as I just cannot stand anything going to waste.

Introducing new foods to Keston got more easier with time, we would give him a taste of cooked food from our plate, offer him a taste of ice - cream, a few little pieces of a muffin or cup cake, blue berry is his favourite flavour. Rooibos tea is not his favourite, i tried him on a bit in place of water during the day, he rejected it even with a dash of honey.

At home we split feeding time between each other, some days Mr hubster will feed baby and other days me.

Keston is now one and enjoys a bowel of oats with pureed banana or berries for breakfast, he sometimes has a bit of maize meal, snack we give him either a strawberry or banana flavoured kiddie yogurt, a tennis biscuit as he never really enjoyed the teething biscuit and a bill-tong stick - excellent for teething. Lunch we give him chicken or mince and mixed veggies. Mashed sweet potatoes, butternut and green veggies is his favourite.

At night he drinks two bottles of Nido growth milk - honey flavoured, he tends to take one before bed time and another either at 11:30PM or 03:30AM - it depends what time he went to bed.

We have no set routine for our child, but by 20:30PM during the week, it is bed time.

We usually give him an evening bath before his bed time and no visitors are allowed to stimulate him, no playtime at all unless he is sick and his routine has some how been disrupted. Once baby goes to sleep, i dash to the gym for my mum off duty time, self love and care. Mr Hubster watches football or plays on the tablet while i am out, if baby wakes up then at least he is near to quickly hush him back to sleep.

I do hope you enjoyed the details on our journey with solid's, snack, meal ideas and updates below.
